Seribu Langkah              Alwi
Adikku Sayang              Nany Widjaja

Sipaku Gelang              Nany Widjaja
O Tolonglah              Alwi
Burung Hantu              Nany Widjaja

One of the oldest albums from the collection 1962-63 approx.
In those days the designers of the covers took care in making attractive covers
with photo-composition and drawing techniques.
1000 Lankah means 1000 Steps, the title of the third song.
Also to be found a song in Sundanese language "Nu Geulis"
" Malapeh Hau " in the Minangkabau language, but not with their music.
Instead a South-American rythm is added, which was populair in the fifties ( Mambo, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha etc. )
"Si Paku Gelang" is in old folk song, it is modernized.
In those days old songs from various regions were changed into a new style and rythm.
The song "Burung Hantu" originates from Holland and is known as "De Uil Zit In De Olmen"
which means " The Owl Sits On The Elm-Tree "
"Burung Hantu" can be translated is "Ghost Bird" which means Owl
The reason is clear. because
The Bird is active at night,
Its dwelling place often in old deserted buildings an towers,
It has strange staring eyes and cries uhu-uhu-uhu, frightening the people in the dark of the night.

Band: The Favourites
Conductor: A. Riyanto

Yang Penting Hatinya-( A. Riyanto )

Terang Bulan-( Harry Toos )
Mana Janjimu-( A. Riyanto )
Tak Mungkin Kutinggalkan-( Harry Toos )
Cinta Monyet-( Is Haryanto )
Sebatang Kara-( Harry Toos )
Hidupku Sunyi-( Sony )
Rintihan / Aku Orang Tak Punya- ( A. Riyanto )

The cover is missing, the picture is from another recording, just in order
to embellish this post.
There is a dent in the record at the end of " Hidupku Sunyi " it is audible, alas.
The overall quality of the surface is quite scratchy, so I tried to remove the noise and pops with software called " DePopper " which cleans up a great part effectively.

The Serial Number of this record is RLL 255, there is another RLL 255 by Remaco also with songs by Tetty Kadi, so this number was issued twice,

Nice songs i.m.o. " Yang Penting Hatinya "  and " Terang Bulan "

" Tak Mungkin Kutinggalkan " reminding to another song.

" Rintihan / Aku Orang Tak Punya " sounds like a new experiment,

Aku Tak Kan Lupa - ( Tonny K. )
Bagai Mimpi - ( Yon K. )

The cover of this LP was originally intended for another record ( Pop Melayu with band D'Strangers ) this text was taped off so the cover could be used for this release.
On the label of the record itself is printed "Hetty & Dience Koes Endang". seemingly by a sister, but it is more likely this Dientje is jokingly invented to give name to the dubbed voice-over.
The songs are composed by the Koeswoyo brothers from the Koes Plus group.
All very nice songs, quiet and almost some country feel.
"Hatiku Dan Hatimu" ( My heart and yours )
"Jiwa Nusantara"(Indonesian soul.) "Nusantara" is a poetical word, In colonial times Indonesia was nicknamed "Insulinde"
"Ayah" ( Father ) The word "Ayah" for father is used in poetical text and songs only.
"Nyanyian Desenja Hari" ( A song at sunset )
"Rayuan Palsu" ( Fake Compliments )
"Cincin Permata" ( Ring with a jewel )

Rudy van Dalm

Rudy van Dalm and The Royal Rhytmics.
Produced by Funckler ( Artone ) records in Holland.
In the sixties many guitar bands with members originating from the ex-colony Indonesia were active in Holland. They were inspired by bands like "The Ventures"
Sometimes they used old folksongs from Indonesia like: "Terang Bulan" "Lenggang Kankung" "Burung Kakatua" etc. These songs were restyled so it could match their act.
This kind genre is called: "Indorock"
Rudy van Dalm, one of those Indorockers. This record is from 1963.

IRAMA RECORDS LPI 17584
TIGADARA SITOMPUL
"Riang Gembira"
Band: "Bubi Chen"
Conductor Bubi Chen.

On the cover of this record the Sitompul Sisters.
Their bulbous hairstyle typical for the early sixties, which made a girl look older.
In Europe this style was even more extreme, lasting till approx. 1967.
In the following years the straight hairstyle came back and a girl could just let hang her hair
down.
So far the description of the cover.
In this period other female groups and duo's:
Duo's : Rita and Nita, Pattie Bersaudara,
Groups 3 girls: Yanti Bersaudara, Trio Idali, and later afer 1970 The Reynettes and Trio Visca.
Groups 4 girls: Dara Puspita, this group became famous because the played their own
instruments and made tours to foreign countries als including Europe.
The songs on this record: just quiet songs. Among the best ones two compositions by Titiek Puspa. The song "Historia De Un Amor" in Latin American style. This also applies for the song "Indada Siririton", this song has lyrics in the Batak language, (?) I think.

The portrait on the cover very "Low Key" photographed, like stills from an old "B" or "Film Noir" movie.
The songs on this record can be divided into 3 categories.
1: Songs in the Minangkabau Language and style: "Si Nona" , "Lintuah" , " Ranuangkanlah","Seroja", Abak Jo Amak" and " Antah Lai Jadi ".
2: A song vocalized in the Sundanese language and style, titled: "Peuyeum Bandung"

6 songs in duet with Alfian, in 1970 already a long time established artist.
"Mau Kondengan" has a Jakarta flavor,
"Bulan Madu Indah" has Chinese or Japanese roots.
"Si Dia" is a cover version from the song "Help Yourself" by Tom Jones.
"Ciuman Terakhir" sounds a little familiar, but cannot trace it now.
"Rada Rada Kumat" is in the Melayu way.
The producers found a male companion to sing duets with her, maybe because of the great popularity of Titiek Sandhora and Muchsin who made record after record in that year. ( 1970 )

"Kain Bugih" - A piece of cloth from the Bugis ? - Its in Minang language
"Pelipur Lara" She likes to sing, for comforting the painful heart. This kind of songs I like to hear, Ernie Djohan and the band are at their best in this kind of songs.
"Bukan Yang Dulu" - Not like before - Rather sad, but not depressing.
"Si Gendut" - The fat one - That is one of the "I know someone who...." songs. It is done with Jakarta words and accent.
"Terunaku" - My grown up ( ? ) She could go right to Nashville with this song, it sounds like it is created there.
Compliments to "Oom Jasir" ( Uncle Jasir )
"Hanya Untukmu Sayang" - Only for you, dear -
"Lebaran Anak Muda" - The Islamic New year, end of the fast period - The music is made oriental in this song so it suits with the content.
"Terimalah Kasihku" - Accept my gratefulness -
"Saat Kau Pergi" - The moment you went away - Riyanto did mostly the slower songs. I think he was at his best when he composed for Tetty Kadi.
"Deritaku" - My suffering -.
" Seperti Hujan Saja " - Like rain - The rain is falling and falling it lasts a long time. A long time also she's waiting for him. The melody is like children shouting names insults at each other.

Ku Tak Sudi - ( Jasir Sjam )
Berat Budi Jasa - ( Jasir Sjam A. Rijanto )

This record must be the seventh by Titiek Sandhora and dating from 1969.
Quite a mixed content regarding the genres:
"Walang Kekek" is Javanese and composed by one of the grandfathers of Indonesian music: Gesang Martoharono
"Untuk Sayanku" is a cover version of "Dear John"
"Sakura No Hana" originates from Japan.
"Cincin Pengikat" is categorized belonging to Mandarin Genre originally: "Hen Ni Ru Gu"
"Pertemuan Sekejap" could be of Chinese or Japanese origins.
"Jangan Sembarang Colek" funny lyrics and composed by Zakarya, who wrote songs in Melayu style.
"Ku Tak Sudi" has until now ignored a little by Mazef, but today, when uploading, he discovered that in fact its quite o.k. in voice, slightly lower than usual, the orchestration is also fine.
In the song "Berat Budi Jasa" she uses various vocal techniques in order to make this song emotional.

Dibalik Tirai Penjara - ( Hamiedan )

The third LP album of this young singer and in my opinion the better one.
"Surat Surat Anda" ( Your Letters ) she gently thanks for the letters she's got from her audience.
"Puk Ami Ami" = originally "I'm going back to Indiana" by the Jackson Five, 1971
"Harapan Yang Suci" ( hope that's pure )

"Bunga Yang Indah" ( Beautiful Flower ) The song originates from Japan, original title unknown.
"Peluklah Daku" ( Embrace me )
"Ku Terkenang Selalu" ( I always remember )
"Buto Galak" This is a nice Javanese Oldie, the Band also is playing in a gamelan-like way, emphazing the regional origin of the song.

"Dibalik Tirai Penjara" ( Behind the prisonbars ) a sad song.

Jali Jali
Katresna - ( Nus S. )

In the year 1973 and thereafter little effort was made by Remaco to design
artistic covers. Just a photo of the artist, front and back of the record covers
are the same.
Musical Genre: Sunda-Melayu.
"Hideung Santen" is the Sundanese version of "Hitam manis"
The songs "Gembala" and "Katresna" are more closer to the Sundanese style,
while "Dibuat" is closest to the Melayu style
At the first strokes of the song "Katineung Ati" the band is suddenly sounding orchestral
"Jali Jali" is from Jakarta. Her original version ( on another record ) is better.
The singer Nanang Qosim, also on this record with his mellow voice.

It is an EP record, while in Europe and the U.S. on the contrary, the single 45 rpm records were populair, one song on either side.
Just imagine, put the ton arm with its needle precisely on the record, just in order to hear a song that lasted 2 minutes or so.
Not many records from this singer exist. This record is quit old, mid sixties I think.
"Surat Undangan" - Invitation letter.
"Cai Kopi" - Tea? and coffee -, it is in Sundanese. Interesting sound, like we' re in a cafe in Baghdad or Cairo.
"Asal Ale Mau Nanti" - If you can wait - Sweet sound from the Moluccas.
"Lamunanku" - My daydreaming. The song has some lazy hot afternoon atmosphere. Just imagine the sixties, at noon, the whole kampong is very quiet, everyone seeks shelter from the hot sun. you are in the bathroom, which is is above open to the sky and the outside world .The sunrays reflecting in the "bak mandi" ( water tub ) its You hear sounds like this from a distance, maybe a few houses away. Thats the feel of the tropics.

Ula Ala Eun             Mustafa Wiryat - Fifi K.
Goreng Repok             Wanade & Sup Y.

The cassette, probably from 1973 or 1974 is recorded from 2 previously relased LP albums, I presume.
LP 1, songs 1 to 10 on this playlist:
NANIN SUDIAR, MANSYUR S.
Band:Ilin's group
"Sunda Melayu"
Its called "Sundamelayu" but its not a mixture of these 2 styles, its different.
""Es Lilin" ( Ice Lolly. the cry of an ice vendor ) has a typical Sundanese sound it is a well known song to be found in many versions.
"Minta Kawin" is kind of a wordplay. First she sings: "Minta Kain" ( I want a piece of cloth )
later followed by "Minta Kawin" ( I want to marry ) sounds roughly the same, in the song the melody originates from the song "Sorban Palid"
"Pisang Goreng" = fried bananas, a delight
Most other songtitles are in Sundanese, which is rather unknown to me. "Ucing Ucingan is about a cat? "Batik Ti Tasik" = Batik
( printed cloth ) from Tasikmalaya ?

LP 2, SONGS 11 TILL 20 ON THIS PLAYLIST
WANADE & SUP Y.
MUSTAFA W. & FIFI K.
"Si Lengser Midang"
Band: Yukawi
Conductor: Mustafa Wirijat.
The name Mustafa Wirijat I had knowledge of before, he was also a composer.
"Tandur Jajar" is a nice song, nice voice of FiFi K., never heard of before, maybe a local star, in this period regional productions became more important, not all singers went to Jakarta to gain nation-wide fame. but just stayed in their own region.
All titles are in Sundanese. "Ngibing" I think, is a word for someone who is a long time guest with someone, without paying anything.

The photo of Tetty Kadi on the cover of this cassette is rather out of place because she is represented with only one song.
She was not a typical Melayu Singer.
This Cassette is full with Melayu styled songs, so a better title could be: "Aneka Lagu Melayu" ( all kind of melayu songs )
"Melayu" is not a sharp defined term.
Before the boundaries were set op there existed many kingdoms and sultanates which extended well over the borders between the present day South Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, East Timor and Indonesia. Malay or Melayu is a tribal identity in Malaysia, the Riau and the Lingga Islands and the East coast of Sumatra, the coastal regions of Kalimantan and scattered in many other places in Indonesia. They were the original speakers of Malay, which was later also used as a second language by other nations in the area.
In the 20th century the Malay language became a national language. In Malaysia it is named "Bahasa Melayu" and in Indonesia "Bahasa Indonesia" so these two languages are basicly the same. Its like the language spoken in Holland is called "Nederlands" and the language of northern Belgium is called "Vlaams" and have a lot in common. At least as people are not talking teir respective dialects, then the pattern changes and it becomes difficult for mutual understanding. The two languages are drifting apart maybe, for instance the modern everyday Indonesian is heavily influenced by all kind of dialect words from Jakarta.

Melayu in the way of singing is the cultural part: way of singing is influenced by Middle Eastern musical styles, because of early contacts with Arab nations and India. this style had already been a long time there but maybe not named "Melayu" but just a very common style in the above mentioned areas. After 1972 appeared many bands and singers who did Melayu songs also many who were originally not singing this genre. A few years late the Dangdut style evoluted from the Melayu style, more flutes and drums were added and the beat was speeded up. This genre became very popular and lasts on till now.
Many songs originate from the present Malaysia, the ones from India I think later, made populair by these Bollywood styled movies the people like those films with their colourful drama, dancing and singing. It was an escape for the working class who could spend a few rupiah in cheap cinemas.
Don't blame me if I cannot mention the originating countries of some songs. The composes are not mentioned on the cassette sleeve.
Its the same as in Holland, some songs considered "typically Dutch" by many people in fact originate from Germany or other countries.

The first song "Ratapan Anak Tiri" is o.k. and already discussed on another playlist where its oploaded from a LP record.
"Magdalena" by Muchsin this time alone, not with his usual mate Titiek Sandhora.
"Kopi Susu" ( Coffee, with milk ) is a nice one it originates from India but luckily they did not follow the way of singing from those Indian movies. There is also a version by Elly Khadam and Mansyur S. which is more close to the Indian way of singing.
"Marlina" by Mansjur S. shows already some transition to Dangdut, with those flutes and drums.
"Pengertian" ( Understanding ) by Ellya Khadam ( also known as Ellya M. Harris ), following the Indian way of singing, she recently died november 2009.
"Untuk Wanita" ( For women ) again Muchsin going solo.
"Kakek Yang Lucu" ( Funny granddad ) by Wiwiek Abidin. I like it. Its about the indecent behaviour of an old man at granddad age, with the unforgettable words:"Todays old men are not what they used to be"
"Keagungan Tuhan" ( The greatness of God ) a religious kind of song solemly recited by Titiek Sandhora.
"Manusia Dan Peristiwa" ( Mankind and Events ) Muchsin agan more dramaticly when he sings alone.
"Di Gosok" ( Rub it ) Its a nice one about the urgent need to take a bath,"it takes the itchy feeling away". Yes, indeed in those tropical countries one can become overheated and bathing is a relief. I like the song, cannot find more of this singer, she's unknown to me - alas.
"Ciumlah Bibirku" ( Kiss my lips ) its not a request, its a demand, with much sensualism like the previous song, its one of my favo songs from this list.Elvy Sukaesih became a famous Dangdut singer, then she was the "Queen of Dangdut" , Rhoma Irama was the king.
"Ke Salabinata" ( To Salabinata ) Another nice one by Anna Bahfen, I would like to find more of this singer, bit I think its hard to find more. Nice Instrumental also. Sadly the song is broken its of the end of the tape reel, Cut off songs occurred often in the cassette era.
"Tamasya Ke Tawanmangun" ( A Day Out To Tawanmanggun ) Don't forget to take a "Tikar" ( straw mat) for the picnic because the red ants are everywhere. "Tamasya" is a word I only heard in songs, never heard someone say "Hey let's go bertamasya, mostly one just says: "Ayo, kita pergi" ( C'mon let's go ) the song is by Lilis Surjani a well known singer from the sixties, many other songs to be found on this blog.
"Khianat Cinta" ( unfaithful love) by Mansyur S..
"Harapanku" ( My Hope ) Ida Laela. Not my cup of tea, its too Indian In voice, but maybe you like it.
"Katakan Saja" ( Only words ) by Wiwiek Abidin. I like her voice.
"Insyaflah" ( By the will of God ) Nanang Qosim is the singer, He is rather well know some more recordings can be found.
"Kembalilah" ( Come back ) again Ida Laela
"Tak Kusangka" ( I will not doubt ) By Fauzi. do not have other recordings from this singer.
"Bertaqwa" dont know the word, its taken from the arab, because there is a q in it. Many arab words used in Indonesia have a solemn or religious meaning.
It is sounding more like a prayer than a song.
"Cermin Kehidupan" ( Mirror of life ) by A. Kadir. He was the leader of the "Sinar Kamala" orchestra. The song sounds Arabic. Some artists on this playlist were of Arab ancestry.
"Ditinggal Pergi" ( Left to Go ) Ida Laela
"Bilakah" ( When? ) Nanang Qosim
"Mencari" ( Search ) Fauzi

The songs by A. Rafiq. Ida Laela, and Fauzi, ( they sound the most Indian-Arabic ) are probably taken from a record with the orchestra "Sinar Kamala" maybe other songs from this list were also previously released on LP records. As you can see from by the above songs some are spiritual and solemn, and others are very "down to earth

TANTI JOSEPHA
"Si Pendatang Baru"
Band: "Buana Suara" Conductor: Johnny Swadie With Guest Star Enteng Tanamal ( Guitar )
The record is from 1967 or 1968. Probably her first one, regarding the title which can be translated as
"The newly arrived". On the photo of the cover its quite an arrival. Dynamic poses like depicted on this cover never to be seen on photos of for instance: Tetty Kadi.
The other photos on this blog are from the magazine "Varia Nada" 1969. You can see the artist carrying a portable shop, probably borrowed from a passing by bread seller. After the photo shootings she was chased by a fierce, enormous turkey from a nearby village, so she ran away screaming, the beast still after her.
The turkey story is from an interview in the above mentioned magazine. If I remember well from reading other magazines: Tanti Josepha and Enteng Tanamal married a few years later

ELLY KASIM
''Main Kim"
Band: Zaenal Combo
Conductor: Zaenal Arifin.
Main Kim = Playing "Kien" or "Kienspel"( In Holland )
at present named "Lotto" or "Bingo".
On the photo of the album cover: Elly Kasim shaking the drum with the numbers to be drawn.
The rattling sound to be heard in the title song.
Some other songs are "deep" Minang in orchestration.
The "Saluang" can be heard, a bamboo flute used in music from the Minangkabau region.
The three songs by Zainal Arifin are more like the regular non-Minang songs.
This composer achieved better on other recordings.
ATTENTION: The record is in bad condition.
Still it can be interesting for anyone who wants to make a hisorical survey of this music.

Song titles I could translate:
Main Kim - Playing Bingo
Dua Hati Telah Bertemu - Two hearts already met
Dirantau - Living abroad
Kunanti Di St. Balapan - I wait at the Balapan Station
Tabik Matohari - Goodbye sun
Sahabat Lama - Old friend

IRAMA LPI 17597
LILIS SURJANI
"Ia Tetap Diatas"
Band "Baju"
Conductor F. Pareira
Year of Issue 1962
Genre: Populair

The first song by Lilis Surjani ( 22 aug 1948 - 9 Oct 2007 ) is:
"Untuk Paduka Yang Mulia Presiden Sukarno" = "For the Sublime and Honourable President Sukarno"
It is a praise-song for Sukarno, the President then, The first, proclaimer of Independence ( 1945 )
Sutedjo, the composer was paid Indonesian Rupiah 1200.000 for it, but before he could spend it, new money was introduced,
The old money could be exchanged for new Rp. 1200 only, so his fee shrunk a thousandfold. For comparison this record bears a stamp on its cover: "Retail Price 100 New Rupiahs"
"Syair Lagumu" = "The Lyrics of Your Song" = Here she asks humbly to Titiek Puspa, who composed the melody, to make lyrics for it. She regarded Titiek Puspa as a an honorable senior sister in music.
"Sesal Diri" = "Self Reproach"
"Genjer Genjer" is another remarkable song. Its about poor people in East Java, who during the second world war suffered starvation and famine and were forced to eat Genjer, a kind of herb or weed growing along roads etc. So it is a song of pity. It could be heard also in socialist and communist meetings. After president Sukarno's abdication, the New Order under President Suharto was severe anti-communist, better not to sing this song anymore. On this record its just meant as a sad song, I think, it is vocalized in Javanese
"Berpisah Di Teras St. Carolus" = "A Goodbye at Saint Carolus" Saint Carolus Borromeus Hospital was built in the 1930's, then a state of the art hospital and situated at Jalan Salemba Raya, Jakarta.
"Untukmu" = "For You"
"Mawar Melati" = "Rose and Melati" A Rose is red and the Melati flower is white. "Red is for courage and white is for purity" she sings. It is a tribute to the national lag, red and white.
"Telpon" no explanation needed, you can hear it ring and the singer's voice: Hallo, who is it?
''Muhibah" = "Goodwill" , Its a goodbye song to a man who goes far away, with a task ( for the nation, maybe a military ) she agrees with his necessary absence and prays for his safe return. Nice "suspense-movie" intro sound.
"Putus Kasih Di Wisma" = "End of a Love at the Nusantara Building" Then one of Jakarta's highest building now overshadowed by much taller ones.
"Hurryku Sayang" A song of goodbye to a man going to the battlefield, again she proudly agrees with his absence.
"Tidurlah" = "Sleep" ( and I sing a lullaby for you )
All songs are solemn, dignified, The president would have liked it, as one day she was invited to meet him at his palace.
