Emillia Contessa - Kroncong

Kroncong music is very old and of mixed origin.
In the seventies already the music was considered mostly for older people who lived quietly in provincial towns
But from time to time newer groups also used this style for their songs.
On this record: modernised versions. The original kroncong sounding more ancient. Instead of electric guitars: the kroncong guitar, violins and flutes were used.
I think this record is from 1974 or maybe 1975.
Maybe one of the last records. Maybe produced in Singapore.
The big companies like Remaco already stopped producing records and made casettes only.
Band: D'Lloyd's Conductor: Bartje Van Houten.

Laily Dimjahtie - Mutiara ML058

MUTIARA MLL 058
LAILY DIMJATHIE
Band: Empat Nada
Conductors Janwar-Hasanudin-A.Rijanto.
Year: 1970

A follower of Titiek Sandhora.
The voice techniques and are similar, in the first song a male singer is present, make it almost sound like a duet with Muchsin.
Also the same mixture of funny and serious songs.
This record is issued somewhere between the release of the 15 th and the 16 th LP record from Titiek Sandhora who then was on the peak of her popularity.
So imitation could lead to succes, the more because Mutiara was a typical mainstream label.
The regular band of this label and composers made nice songs for her, just like they did for Titiek Sandhora and other artists.
Nicest songs :
"Tukang Tipu"
"Kisah Kasih Remaja" this one is slightly instrumented in the Melayu or India-Melayu way.
"Jangan Percaya" the sound vaguely reminds us of old dances and Melayu folk songs.

Coversongs:
"Kau Menyiksa Hatimu" = "O Sole Mio"
"Terserah Nasib" = "Que Sera"
"Embun Pagi" = "On Top of Old Smokey"
"Laily Adikku" = "Denny"
On the cover photo she wears a necklace with "Sandra" and "Andres" on the medallion.
A gift from Sandra Reemer and Dries Holten?
The cover is also somewhat damaged, from the beginning on when I bought it.

Adul Gondrong - ( Hamiedan )
Racun Hidupku - ( Hamiedan - M.N. Chan )
Kau Menyiksa Hatiku - ( Lyrics - S. Djufari )
Tukang Tipu - ( Nus S. )
Hanya Sekejap - ( Wedhasmara )
Terserah Nasib - ( Lyrics - Setiawan S. )
Kisah Kasih Remaja - ( Wisjnu Mouradhi )
Menanti Kepastian - ( Jasir Sjam )
Buat Saja Seenaknya - ( Is Haryanto )

Ervinna in Suriname

ERVINNA
An LP made by a Surinam company: MFA records.
Year approx 1977 ( ? )

In a second hand record-collector shop Mazef found this LP.
It was stored in the Surinam-section of this shop.
However the artist is from Indonesia.
She did concerts in Surinam for the Javanese community, who surely were pleased to hear songs from their country of origin.
How did the Javanese come to Surinam? The fact is that both Indonesia and Suriname were ruled by the Dutch.
Surinam which was underpopulated, was in need of employees who could work in the plantations and later also in the bauxiet mines.
The fitst group of Javanese arrived in 1894. Now there are 72.000 Javanese in Suriname, above tha als groups of mixed descent.
Remarkable fact: Surinam is a little bigger than the Island of Java but the population counts just 481.000 people, this is less than Surakarta ( Solo ) on Java. If the whole population of Java should migrate to Surinam, the population density per square kilometer would still be less than today's population density on Java, 1029 persons on each square kilometre, whilst Surinam less than 3 people per square kilometre, Many South American countries are underpopulated compared with countries in South East Asia. This has much to do with the fertility of the soil and the centuries old rice-growing culture.

Other Indonesian artists who visited Surinam: Waljinah, Titiek Sandhora, Mus Mulyadi and Arie Koesmiran, the latter I am not quite sure she's been there.
Ervinna has been many other countries also, to mention Singapore and Hongkong, where she did most songs from the west with that charming extra touch, difficult to describe, in putting extra emphasis in expressing emotions in songs. Abroad she was even more populair than in Indonesia.
On this record she did songs in Javanese language, and typical tone scale. One song is called "Surinam" this must be a tribute to her host-country. I ddont know the name of the band, it is not mentioned. Was it a local band from Surinam or had all been pre-recorded in Indonesia?

INDAH SML 12041
TETTY KADI & ALFIAN
Band: Vista
Conductors: Sani - Nana
Year 1970

Another LP record with Tetty Kadi and Alfian together.
The names of the conductors maybe hidden as a code name, maybe because they were under contract with another company.
Various Styles, like the Titiek Sandhora records.
"Di Ujung Jalan" - At the end of the road - Belonging to the "Mandarin" genre, but maybe even from Japan. I cannot trace the original.
"Tak Berpisah lagi" - Not parting anymore - This song does not flow as nicely as the other songs from Riyanto.
"Tini Jago Ping Pong" - Tini is a table tennis pro - It is in Melayu style, but when other Melayu songs are about the big facts of life it is just about a friend who is good in table tennis and smokes a lot.
"Ku Mengerti Selembar Kisah" - I know where is the story about -
"Malam Syahdu" - A perfect night - It is a nice duet, both singers at their best.
"Kisah Di Bulan April" - An april story -
"Berpura Pura" -Just make believe- It is from the well known song "Guantanamera"
"Tanda Mata" - Souvenir -
"100% Waras" - One hundred percent recovered - Melayu and Indian sounds can be heard.
"Kan Kulupakan Yang Lalu" - I will forget about the past -
"Sambutlah Tanganku" - Take my hand -
"Bertemu Dalam Kerinduan" - Met when longing - The song originates from Japan: Titled: "MINATOMACHI" also became well known in the Chinese world as: "XING SHEN GO TUO LU"

TITIEK SANDHORA
"PUDJAAN HATIKU"
Band: Empat Nada
Conductors: Jadin / A. Riyanto
Year 1971
The 20th album, this time without her companion, Muchsin.
Parts of the photos from the cover are originating from designs shown on playlists 053 and 125.
She dressed in a kimono, there must have been a connection with Japan and the Indonesian Popmusic from that period, especially the songs by Titiek Sandhora, a well known one is "Gunung Fuyiama" original title: "Kutsukake Tokijiro"
I remember vaguely having read somewhere about she knew a lady originating from Japan who chaperonned her to the live concerts far away and also made or bought all those dresses.
The songs on this playlist:
"Kisah Sedih Dihari Minggu" - A sad story at sunday -
"Maafkanlah" - This is an imported song, I remember from begin 60's. its title: "Michael row the boat ashore" or just in short "Michael"
"Jangan Seenaknya" - "not the nice things for only you ( and leaving the heavy stuff for me )" A song executed in slightly Melayu way of singing.
"Pujaan Hatiku" - My adorer - This coul be a song originating from Japan.
"Terpaut" - Bound ( together ) -
"Ku Harapkan" - I hope ( you will come back )
"Tiada Lagi" - No more - A cover version of a song which I cannot trace.

"Jangan Pergi" - Don't go away - a cover version of a song, originally "Mother" by John Lennon.
"Marah Marah" - Angry -
"Tiada Akhir Tiada Putus" -There is no end, and no separation -

Kroncong of the Independence War - Evergreen TTS563

EVERGREEN TTS 563
SAJEKTI, SUJUDI M, RITA ZAHARAH,
M, RIVANY, ISNARTI
Band: Brig.Jen S. Pirngadi
Year 1965
Genre: Kroncong.

This one I  acquired in Rotterdam, at a collectors shop. I do not want to talk about money, but the price equals let's say two glasses of beer, or a very Big Mac, a bottle of cheap wine, 2 litres of gas ( bensin ) in that range . While a hamburger or a glass of beer goes in in out the body, the pleasure of having another collectible item lasts longer. When seeing the record in the shop it is about the same of meeting a well known person whose existence is known already, but not yet met face by face. I already had some knowledge, but just by a glance at the cover.
I have seen the record in other collections, its not very rare I think, but the content is of historical interest, because the songs are inspired by the Indonesian war for independence in the years following the second world war.
The style can be described a "romantic kroncong" with heroic content in a poetical way. In fact the Kroncong Music became national music on recordings like this one.
The record is recorded in Indonesia by Irama in 1965, but for one reason or another it is manufactured in Japan by Toshiba.
The record itself is made of red plastic and transparent.
It is from the radio days, the later Pop singers were still at school, To be heard exclusively the older generation like Sajekti with her characteristic voice, Rita Zaharah, which we already met on playlist nr. 038
There is already a description on the backside of the record visible here below.
The song titles are also transated on the record cover:
"Sepasang Mata Bola" - a pair of bright eyes -. ( a soldier going to battle sees a bright ewed girl just as he is boarding a train to battle. Its like her eyes begging him to stand strong and protect the country.
"Pemuda Pemudi" is translated a "Boy and Girl" but its not just a boy and a girl but patriotic young brigadists who joined the battle or supported the soldiers.
"Rangkaian Melati" - a garland of jasmine - It ties the hearts of a couple, the man far away on the battlefield.
"Pahlawan Merdeka" - Hero of Liberty -
"Selendang Sutra" - shawl of silk " -
"Telaga Biru" - Blue lake -
"Saputangan Dari Bandung Selatan" - The handkerchief from south Bandung - It can be used for waving goodbye to the hero going to battle and also to wipe away tears of sadness,
"Medan Bakti" - Battle field -
"Stambul Merdeka" - Song of liberty - In fact "Stambul" is a special way of singing originating from the street theatre from the old days, narrating the stage acts.
"Gugur Bunga" - Fallen flower - Her man his fallen on the battlefield, her sadness is is eased by remembering he was a great hero.
"Petir" - Lightning -
"Bandung Selatan Diwaktu Malam" - Evening in South Bandung -
Ismael Marzuki composed most of the songs. He was honoured for it. In Jakarta on the grounds of the former zoo a exhibiton area was laid out to become a place for cultural events, the Ismail Marzuki Gardens ( Taman Ismail Marzuki )

Sepasang Mata Bola - ( Ismail Marzuki )             Sajekti and Choir
Pemuda Pemudi - ( Sujudi M. )                  Sujudi M.

Lilis Suryani - Remaco RL020

REMACO RL 020
LILIS SURJANI
Band: Pantja Nada
Conductor: Enteng Tanamal
Year 1965 - 66
Genre: Various, moderate modern.
The cover is damaged, the record is in reasonable shape.
"Pantun Jenaka" - Funny poem - All kind of sayings and comments shape as a "pantun" or traditional short poems., don't know where the melody is from, sounds like a working song or maybe even a dance tune somewhere from the coastal areas of South East Asia.
"Gelombang Alun" - The swell of the waves - Can't detect if its sung in Javanese or Sundanese, strange, normally I can.
"Gang Kelinci" - Rabbit alley - or -Rabbit lane- There she originated form. If you ever went to Pasar Baru in Jakarta you might be unaware there is crowded neighbourhood just behind the shopping emporiums. The song is composed by Titiek Puspa, when Lilis Surjani came to visit her she surely would have said: "Aha, that child from Gang Kelinci, again"
In the song the folks of this area are compared with rabbits, swarming and crawling.
"Asmara" - Deep love -
"Hari Ulang Tahun" ( My ) Birthday. In the song can be heard she has reached the age of 17. She was born in 1948, so the song is from 1965, which is quite possible, the record is also from 1965. So its quite autobiographical, like the song mentioned before.
"Terbang Lalat"- Flying Flies - Repeated rhymes with no direct meaning.
"Kisah Ali Baba" - The story of Ali Baba- In the song a mysterious oriental atmosphere is created, as you can hear by the tune.
"Tandak Sambas" Its sounds regional, maybe from the coastal areas of Sumatra or beyond to Malaysia, or the coastal areas of Kalimantan ( don't blame me if I am wrong ) "Tandak" is another word for Dance, mostly in traditional way they dance in rows.
Pantun Jenaka - ( Lyrics M. Sani )
Gelombang Alun
Gang Kelinci - ( Titiek Puspa )
Asmara - ( Titiek Puspa )
Hari Ulang Tahun - ( Titiek Puspa )
Terbang Lalat
Kisah Ali Baba - ( Lilis Surjani )
Tandak Sambas

Elly Kasim, Nuskan Syarif, Eva Noerdin

PRINDU RECORDS NAL 723
ELLY KASIM, NUSKAN SYARIF, EVA NOERDIN
"Top Minang Pop"
Band: Kumbang Cari
Conductor: Nuskan Syarif.

Attention. Its not Mazefs fault, it is on the record itself, a rumbling noise like someone on the set did not connect a cable properly
only on song nr 2 ( Tanjuang Pariuak )
Gained nation wide popularity, Elly Kasim returned from the Jakarta studios back to her homeland Minangkabau. She went local, but still high rated by many. So the record is one hundred procent Minang, unlike the older recordings which often had a mixed content.
I can read som Minangkabau text, but listening to the songs becomes difficult for me. So the first song "Anak Salapan" would probably mean - 8 children - . "Tanjuang Periuak" is about the scenic eauty of her region, "Kue Mankuak" must be that dlightful spongy cake, also well known in other regions as Kue Mangkok, mor I cannot translate ecept "Sopir Auto" - the driver of a car".
The nicest songs are the number 1, 2 , 5 , 6 , 7 and 12 from this playlist IHU ( in my humble opinion )
Nuskan Syarif the bandleader can be heard doing a song, and also songs by Eva Noerdin, a new singer. The record is from approx. 1974

Anak Salapan - ( Nuskan Sjarif )                  Elly Kasim

Titiek Sandhora - Mutiara MLL065

MUTIARA MLL 065
TITIEK SANDHORA
"Mimpi Diraju"
Band: Empat Nada
Conductors: Janwar-Hasanudin-A.Rijanto
The 16th LP, if my counting is right.
On the cover dressed in one of those 1970 outfits, older people who see back this kind of photos of their younger
years always laugh and shake their heads. "Just crazy we were then"
The first song "Sekretaris" is about the life of a secretary girl.
There are quite a few cover songs on this record:
"Mimpi Dirayu" = the erotic song "Je t'aime moi non plus" by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, France 1969
"Pemuda Semua Sama" =  " La Paloma "
"Datanglah Kasih" = " Hey Jude " by Lennon - McCartney 1968
"Bunga Bunga Berguguran" ( withered flowers ) taken from a Chinese or Japanese song,
Other songs to mention: "Micoma" is from Manado ( North Sulawesi )
"Sembilan Bulan" ( Nine Months ) is about the hardships of pregnancy, and the father of the babe is gone, a sad song.
"Hidup Didunia" ( "Living on this world" ) live is short, do things well, you only live once and when it is ended you have to justify all your deeds to the Almighty up above. Riyanto did a fine job by writing this song. It has profoundness and it proves this composer could also make songs in Melayu style.
