Various Artists - You are so beautiful

.
A record from the 50's I think
From Shanghai
In a retro - modern style.
I think the were trying an international mixed style
Not that evergreen -stile like " Mama Hao " etc, which I like

Anna Mathovani - Mutiara MLL091

 Mutiara MLL091

Anna Mathovani

" Menanti Balasan "

Band: Presto

Conductor: Anton.

The record is from 1970.

Not as good as two other Anna Mathovanis on this blog: The Cassette with

Sundanese classics and the Vinyl record: " Ramayana "

I think the producers would make her a clone of Titiek Sandhora, very

populair at that time. It is noticeable in the songs: " Cintakah " " Cari Muka "

and " T.T.S.

" Tak Rela Kau Paksa " a reasonably good song.

" Simon " is originally " Seeman " by Freddy Quin.

" Pengakuanmu " is from : " The End of the World " by Skeeter Davis.

The Songlist:

PERTEMUAN SEMBUNYI            ( IS HARYANTO )

MENANTI BALASAN   ( M. HUSEIN )

SIMON   (  LYRICS: D. DJUFARI )

A tropical night in the old days.

Silent, dark. Suddenly from a distance the sound of Kroncong Music.

Kroncong belongs to the stillness of the night.

This record is bought in Amsterdam, on the second hand-goods market. ( 2012 )

It is from the Philips Company, who had also a branch in Singapore and had acces to Malay - Indonesian music and so could bring it to Nederland, the home-base of Philips.

Ervinna - Mustika GH008

 MUSTIKA GH 008
ERVINNA
"Pop Melayu Vol. I"
Band: "Pancaran Muda"
Conductor: Zakaria.

I think the record is from 1973-1974
"Dalam Kerinduan" . Its structure is simple, but is resulting
in a good composition.
The singer Ervinna can also be heard on other posts on this blog.
Not a typical Melayu singer, she did many genres.
Two Melayu songs on this list:"Salam Sayang" and "Sekedar Bertanya"
In another version of these songs, which are also on this blog,  it seems she is singing more joyful and relaxed.

Ingin Hidup Sendiri - ( Zakarya )
O - La - La - ( Zakarya )
Tamasya Naik Becak - ( Zakarya )

Menangis Terseduh - ( Zakarya )

Vivi Sumanti - Cassette

I think the recording is made in 1971

The last two songs printed on the cassette are not on the audio tape.

"Ditinggal Pergi" and "Jangan Iseng" are a little bit like the "Melayu" songs composed by Zakarya and Djoko S. No info is given on the cover of this cassette so I cannot determine the real names of the composers.

Listening to "Kecapi" Sundanese sounds can be heard.

"Unkuanmu" is from Manado ( ? )

Rita, Nita and Rossy - Irama LP175101

 IRAMA LP175101

RITA & NITA AND ROSSY

Band: Orkes Pamor

Conductor: Fred Firmansjah

Looking at their hairstyle the record must be from somewhere between 1961 and 1963.

They are one of the first girl groups,

The singer Rossy is added to Rita and Nita.

There is something odd with this record: when playing other records the needles of my

amplifier are swaying merrily from left to right, whilst on this record they almost stand still.

I don't know its because of the recording technique or its because the record is worn out.

It could also be its focused on singing, with the band at low profile, because the two instrumentals

are inducing more movement to the indicators of my set.

At those early days the launching of a new record was quite an event, at the backside of the record thre is a lead in text by Sjaiful Nawas, a kind of music-guru in that era. Also stated the type of microphones used and the time the songs are lasting which is useful for me also when splitting the .WAV file in separate songs.

The price in Rupiahs on the backside has crossed out and changed into a new price several times, also a stamp with: New money ( Nilai Baru )

So it is from the time the Rupiah was on a rollercoaster track, so it was better to spend it right away, because the next day it would be plunging dramatically.

Back to the songs:

"Senja Dipegunungan" - Evening Dusk in the mountains - Nice rhythm.

"Doaku" - My prayer -

"Terimah Kasih Atas Binkisanmu" - Thanks for your present -

"Kereta Api Malam" -Night train -

"Karam Surang" This is Minang, I think, cannot produce a translation.

"Untuk Emmyku" - For my Emmy -

"O Joni" - O Johnny -

"Selayang Pandang" - At a glance - Judging from the sound it is a "Joget" , dance song from either coastal Sumatra or across the straits the adjoining shores of Malaysia. It is a song already existing before this LP was released.

"Buku Harian" - Diary -

"Penjual Koran" - Newspaper seller -

"Kasih Ibu" - The care of a mother -

"Baju Baru" - New dress -

Senja Dipegunungan - ( Tom )

Doaku - ( Shahriel )

Terimah Kasih Atas Bingkisanmu - ( Mus Mualim )

Karam Surang

Untuk Emmyku - ( I. Sigarlaki )

Kroncong " Lief Java " - a Record produced in Nederland

Another record produced in Nederland, approx. in 1967.

This country lost the colony named Indie, which became Indonesia in 1945.

Thousands of Dutchmen, persons of mixed blood, and others who were attached to them left the new republic. And went to Holland.

Many settled in The Hague city. In old mansions who had seen better times and were divided into apartments for the "Indo's.

The Hague, where most of the year the cold sea-wind is blowing through the deserted avenues.

Lots of parks and and age-less ladies chatting in tea-rooms, the last stand you could see them still wearing hats and drinking tea with their little finger in the air, exchanging the latest society-gossips. In such a city many Indo's lived, the hallways and stairways of their apartments smelling of trasi or their other Indonesian cookings. Nowadays The Hague became alive and many indo's left the city and dispersed all over The Netherlands, may headed for California because the found Holland a too packed with no room to move.

The elderly people still dreaming about the past and their kroncong music, as you can hear from this music.

The younger generation adapted fast to the Duch lifestyle and music. kroncong music was for the elderly people.

If you meet such a person from the 3rd of 4th generation in Holland, they cannot speak "Maleis" anymore but all know the names of all those Indonesian dishes.

Songs:

"Suling Bambu": - Bamboo flute-

"Kroncong Kemayoran" - Kroncong from Kemayoran - A neighbourhood in Jakarta where many Indo's were dwelling. This song is also fine for parties and birthdays, because the lyrics can be changed easily, depending on the occasion. shouting of "hoi" at the right moment, which can be ruined by the consumption of too much alcohol.

"Terkenang Kenang" - left memories -

"Kroncong Nachtsirenen" - Kroncong of the night Sirenes - What is a Sirene? maybe you know already. Imagine: You walk in the woods, at night,

Then suddenly you hear a girl's voice: Come here! with beautiful singing. You proceed further into this forest following her sweet voice, which appears close already, and then more far away. At last you lose all sense of direction and end up drowning in a swamp.

"Stambul Dasimah" A Stambul is a kind of street theatre, its set up is like the Chinese street opera, but with other costumes and stories from the Malay, Persian, and European scene. Its audience people who lived in the areas inbetween the European and the indigenous groups.

It is a story about Dasimah and in the song you can hear the comments by the audience who were always very involved with the play.

A girl in the audience is with Leo, saying: "Wat wil je toch worden, Leo" In Indonesian-Dutch: "What are you up to, Leo" ( Maybe Leo is taking advantage of the darkness ) In standard Dutch "Wat wil je toch worden" means: What do you want to become? and so if Leo was a freshly arrived Dutchman he would have answered: "O, maybe a doctor or a lawyer" ( It originates from: "Mau jadi apa, Leo?" )

"Gelang Si Paku Gelang" Difficult to translate in many songs sweet gentle words are put together like beads on a necklace.

" Kroncong Telomoyo "  refers to the Telomoyo mountain

"Putri Solo" -Girl from Solo-

"Kroncong Bandan" -Kroncong from Bandan- Maybe kampung Bandan in North Jakarta

"Stambul Ombak Laut" -Stambul about the waves of the sea - Maybe at such Stambul play they use sea-waves made of colored carton, shaped like big saw-blades, which were pulled from left to right on the stage, by invisible stage-

Ernie Djohan - Remaco RL018

REMACO RL 018
ERNIE DJOHAN
"La Novia"
Band: Kwintet Mus Mustafa
Conductor: M. Mustafa

An early Ernie Djohan recording, from approx. 1965.
The designer of the cover did some artwork by placing the head of the artist on someone else's torso.
It is the first one on the Remaco Label, before that are recordings made in Singapore and/or Malaysia, on those early recordings she developed a crooner voice,
I saw Ernie on Dutch TV, in Nederland, with "Only for a song" in a populair TV show hosted by Willem Duys.
she was visiting Europe back then, don't know of it was in 1968 or 1969.

On this record:
"Burung Merpati": - Pigeon -
"Daar Bij De Rivier": - At the river - Dutch ( by Anneke Grohnloh ) but has French origins: "Pres de ma riviere"
"Senja Berlagu": - A song at sunset -
"Terunaku": - My young hero - In content like like the independence war songs, she hopes her friend, defending the country will be save.
"Kudengar Suaramu": - I hear your voice -
"La Novia": -The wedding - From Italy.
"Hadiah Untukku": - A gift for me -
"Selamat Berjoang Kasih": - A good ( safe ) campaign, my love - Another song in which she hopes for a safe return for her beloved hero, who is on a military mission far away. ( Maybe these songs were from the time of "Konfrontasi" )

The songs she made a breakthrough are on two succeeding records also by Remaco industries.

J&B Records JBL 28840
ELLY KASIM
"Pandeka Tengkak"
Band: "Kumbang Tjari"
Conductor: Nuskan Sjarief
The 40th record of the J&B company. approx. 1969-1970
On its cover a traditional Minangkabau house with its striking rooftop design.
Popularized versions of Minang songs from the Jakarta studio bands became hits: "Ayam dan Lapeh" and: "Bareh Solok" were loved by a great audience.
This recording returns to the original Minang music, but not yet "the real stuff" which has a very distinctive sound.
As the songs are in Minangkabau language, it is difficult to translate.
Just a trial ( and hopefully not an error )
"Baju Ye Ye" - a modern dress -
"Tanah Jambi" - The land of Jambi - ( a province in Sumatra )
"Kusi Bendi" - The driver of a coach -
"Nasib Si Buta" - The fate of a blind person -

" Bunga Anggrek " a cassette.

A very old cassette maybe from 1971 or 1972. recorded by "Indah" productions
"Indah" records were made for them by the REMACO moulding company.
Maybe this became too expensive, because in the first years of the seventies many customers of Remaco stopped ordering records and switched to cassette tapes, while others went bankrupt. When Mazef came to Indonesia in december 1974 he only saw heaps of cassettes, for sale every market, so he thought the reign of the records was over, only in Pasar Baru in the old established shops one could find new LP records.
Long time I assumed the record-production stopped around 1975, but recently I discovered some companies went on well in the 80's maybe till approx. 1986 ( for instance Musica records en Purnama records, plus some obscure labels )
On this cassette to be heard mostly well known kroncong tunes, don't know which band is playing the, some are played like "The Steps" , also to be heard funny additions made by a some voices
Songs mentioned on the cover, but not on the tape itself: "Rayuan Pulau Kelapa" "Walang Kekek" . " Rangkaian Melati" and "Nonton Bioskop"
Not all songs are kroncong by origin, but are transformed into kroncong style.
"Es Lilin" is a Sundanese classic. "Jangan Tingglkan Daku" and "Sungai Mengalir" has roots in China or is from the Chinese areas in south east Asia. "Kembang Jatoh" has a specific Jakarta-sound.
"Impian Semalam" is a nice one: all musical gimmicks and cliches are re-cycled in a funny way

Mengapa Kau Menangis
Selendang Sutera
Sarinande
Jangan Tinggalkan Daku

Aneka Pop Indonesia - Cassette

Cassette "Aneka Pop Indonesia"
On the frontcover from left to right and top to below:
Ernie Djohan, Bob Tutupoli, A. Riyanto, Tetty Kadi.
A "poor man's" edition maybe because there are only 11 songs on it, whilst
in fact a normal cassette could easily contain 24 songs.
The songs:
"Lupakan Masa Lalu" vocalized by A. Riyanto who mostly composed songs for others..
"Keagungan Tuhan": The solemn song the praises the greatness of the Almighty, on another playlists on this blog another version by Titiek Sandhora can be found.
"Why Do You Love Me" Bob Tutupoly adapts to a more international style of singing.
"Pacar" by Iin. Assume its from the mid 1970's. I have another cassette with the singer Bimbo and Iin.
"Mutiara Dari Selatan" just a nice song don't know more about the singer.
"Angin" by Ernie Djohan from a later period. A strange thing is she sings with a higher voice than on her first records, back then the crooner girl.
"Sayang" by Sam/Andre/Bartje Van Houten,
the same song can be heard from Wiwiek Abidin on another blogpost.
"Permata Hati" Tetty Kadi, not exciting, just a nice song,
"Rajah Bodoh" This funny song I have also on another cassette, maybe with a better sound quality.

Titiek Sandhora - Mutiara MLL040

MUTIARA MLL 040
TITIEK SANDHORA
"Djangan Ngintip"
Band: Empat Nada
Conductors: Janwar-Hasanudin / A. Riyanto.
The design of the front cover is very different from the backside.
I have the same record also on the "Globe-Record" label where the red green backside
is also used as front side.
Strangely enough some songs mentioned on the cover are not on the record.
Even the song "Jangan Ngintip" ( Don't Peek ) which is the title of the whole album.
Its listed on the cover but not on the record itself.
.

"Manuk Podang" is Javanese,
"Bila Menjadi Gadis Remaja" and "Di Tepi Danau Toba" sounding like a song from the Mandarin genre, maybe even from Japan.
"Tang Ting Tang Ting" is the sound of a street vendor, each seller having its own sound, ringing a bell or knocking on a piece of wood or bamboo.
The record is from 1970 the Titiek Sandhora & Muchsin finest year: about 10-15 Lp albums were produced then, dont know the exact number. The genuine albums from 1969-1971 are always the ones labeled "Remaco" and "Mutiara" , so the "Globe-Record" is a kind of outlet-production or derivate. After 1972 new songs were originally recorded on other labels.
Titiek Sandhora and Muchsin were not directly under contract with Remaco, but paid by 2 rich persons, one named Ang Ka Loang from Surabaya. They bought the all Titiek Sandhora records made by Remaco and took all the risk for the sales. Maybe Mutiara was their private label.

Manuk Podang - ( Maruti - Budiman )
Bila Menjadi Gadis Remaja - ( Lyrics- D. Djufari )
Biar Saja Kucoba - ( G. Pakaja )
Di Tepi Danau Toba - ( Lyrics D. Djufari )
Kawan Biasa - ( Mus K.Wirja )
Surat Pembawa Gembira - ( Nus. S. )
Tang Ting Tang Ting - ( Lyrics Surjadi )
Kau Curi Hatiku - ( Wedhasmara )
Tiada Cinta Yang Abadi - ( Jasir Sjam )
Album Lama - ( Hamiedan )
Jangan Kau Tanya Lagi - ( Lyrics Setiawan S. )
Aku Diciumnya - ( Wisjnu Mouradhi )

" Parade Kota Kembang " Upit Sarimanah and others - Mesra LP10

"Parade Kota Kembang" in wich you can hear various artists from the Sunda Region. ( Bandung is the center ) Some songs like: "Dicandung"
"Kabale Nyuntyung" "Purnama" and "Jeruk Manis" sounding genuine Sundanese, The other remaining songs more like regular songs from that period ( 1966 )
MESRA Records LP 10

UPIT SARIMANAH,
AJI SATRIANAH,
FENTY EFFENDI,
ETTY BARDJAH,
NENNY TRIANA,
DINAR ADAM & SARIP

"Parada Kota Kembang"

Bands:
"Melodi Ria" - Conductor: Rachman A.
"Gita Remadja" - Conductor: Iskandar.

Genre partly Sundanese.
Year: 1966.

On the cover: "Parade Kota Kembang" Kota Kembang = Flower City, the nickname of Bandung, the capital of West Java, in this province the Sundanese language and cultural identity prevails.

The record is in a bad state, I think the number 2 worst from my collection. So be prepared, although I cleaned it with crackle removing software.

Upit Sarimanah, Fenty Effendi, Etty Bardjah and Nenny Triana, are known from other recordings ( from my knowledge ) from the last 2 mentioned artists there are playlists on this blog.
Many songs composed by Kosaman Djaja, a name to remember, another founder of Sundanese modern music is Mang Koko.
Her under a review of the songs.
"Dicandung" Nice exemple of Sunda modern Pop from the sixties, typical is the complicated intro of the song. a nice one, like it.
"Potret Kekasihku" A picture of my loved one - Just a sentimental song, not typical Sundanese.
"Kabale Nyuntyung" a duet in moderate Sunda modern.
"Purnama" - Full moon- in classical way.
"Adikku lahir" - My newborn brother or sister - Not typical sundanes, just a song. This is from a very damaged track from the LP
"Cikapundung" is played in "Kroncong" style.
"Menunggu" - Waiting - Nice solid voice by the singer.
"Ketud" Another modern song by Nenny Triana,
"Jangan Menangis" - Don't cry - It is not Sundanese in style, just a song, could be from anywhere.
"Jeruk Manis" - Sweet Citron - Upit Sarimanah is mostly maintaining the classical Sundanese style.
"Peupendeuyan Leuweung" by Aji Satrianah. Another nice song, good voice, a bit on the low scale, like Tuty Subardjo and Anna Mathovani.
"Galeundreung" by Dianar Adam. More ore less done in the old fashioned way of singing from the fifties.

Dicandung - ( Kosaman Djaja )                  Etty Bardjah

A record produced in Nederland

Fontana 6455009 approx. 1968
This is one of a few records I bought not second-hand but new from a record shop in Nederland.
Record companies Philips and Fontana were already active in Singapore and/or Malaysia.
They recorded songs from many Indonesian artists. Probably there was a also connection by the Indonesian record company Remaco ( Eugene Tan ) who had their matrices made in Singapore from the master tapes shipped from Jakarta.

This record is made for people back in Nederland, with songs already in stock from earlier records.
So it is a kind of selection in wide array.
Quite a lot of traditionals, kroncong and instrumentals on this record.

Bubuy Bulan: A Sundanese Monument composed by Benny Corda.
He was from a group of Jazz Musicians from the Philippines.
They came to Bandung in 1925 and played mostly for a Dutch audience,
who then began to appreciate Jazz music. The singer Titiek Puspa ( born 1937 ) was known as a songwriter also.

"Aku Jadi Direktur" ( Zainal Arifin )    - Alfian
- If I were a director" - Funny song, there are Dutch words in it, from the time the upper-middle class still used it now and then.
"Bandar Jakarta"  - The Steps
- Jakarta Harbour - in Kroncong style.
"Terkenang Kenang" - ( George De Fretes ) - Ivo Nilakreshna
- Remembering - also in Kroncong style
"Dondong Opo Salak" - Aida Mustafa
- A traditional in Javanese language. When singing traditionals or Kroncong those artists had to obey certain rules for these songs, not fully throwing in their own style.
"Nona Manis"- Salina
- Sweet Girl - in electronic Kroncong, the band Salina similar in sound with band The Steps.
"Waktu Fajar" ( P.D.) - Orkes R. Maroeti
- At sunset - Kroncong again.
"Tannase" ( J.F.R. Pattirane ) - Yanti Bersaudara
- a song from the Moluccas.
"Teungteuingeun" ( Kosaman Djaja ) - Diah Iskandar
- a Sundanese song.
"Kisah Cinta" ( A. Rachman ) - Isnarti
-Love story -
"Lain Dulu Lain Sekarang" - The Steps
- Old times differ from the present - Another instrumental
"Kicir Kicir" - Salina
 - Instrumental, reminding old music from Jakarta
"Pantai Pelabuhan Ratu" ( Zainal Arifin ) - Alfian
- The beach of Pelabuhan Ratu - This beach is on Java's south coast.
"Sapu Tangan" - Han Wen
-Handkerchief- By Han Wen, a rather unknown name

"Pelangi" is the only song which has the old qualities.
( Reynold ) composer, = Reynold Panggabean

Titiek Sandhora & Muchsin Alatas - Mutiara ML002

MUTIARA ML002
TITIEK SANDHORA & MUCHSIN ALATAS
"Relakan Daku Pergi"
Band: Empat Nada
Conductors: Jadin / A. Riyanto

Her third album, the first in duet with Muchsin.
4 songs are cover-versions of existing songs.
Relakan Daku Pergi = "Please Release Me"
Aminah = "O Mein Papa"
I Love You = ? , maybe a song by Skeeter Davis.
Naik Delman = From the "Mandarin" genre or even more probably: from Japan.
The 2 songs I like the most:
"Tak Ingin Berpisah" ( "Don't Want To Part" ) Composer: Harrry Santosa ( on later recordings mentioned as: Harry Toos )
and "Siapa Itu" (" Who Is That")
The record is from 1968
P.S. When hearing "Siapa itu" I discovered an irregularity at the end of the the song, caused by a dameged section of this record.

Relakan Daku Pergi
Seminggu Berpisah - ( A. Riyanto )
Tak Ingin Berpisah ( Harry Santosa )
Aminah
Hallo Sayang - ( A. Riyanto )
Siapa Itu - ( Mus K. Wirja )
I Love You
Naik Delman
